3 November 1943 - The Obelisk Issue

Issued to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the coronation of Emperor Hailé Selassié I. Stamps were denominated in East African Cents and sold at double face value.

Left Photo: The original or Old Obelisk in Arat Kilo Square. It was originally built in the early 1920s to resemble the ancient Axum Obelisks. It stood approximately 20 meters high with a clock about four meters from the top. On the tip of the Old Obelisk stood an illuminated 5 pointed star. It was open at the bottom and allowed people to walk underneath it. The  Old Obelisk was destroyed at some point during Italian Occupation. Right Photo: Arat Kilo Square was renamed to Miazia 27 Square. In 1943, Emperor Hailé Selassié I ordered a new Obelisk to be build in the same location to commemorate the memory of the patriots and martyrs killed during the Italian invasion and occupation.
